Enough is a Enough Jefferson County
The JefÂferÂson county comÂmisÂsion is at it again. With a $105 milÂlion debt payÂment loomÂing, the county comÂmisÂsion is in negoÂtiÂaÂtions with Regions Bank to take out a $25 milÂlion bridge loan to begin bringÂing back the more than 1000 workÂers who have been on upaid leave since the beginÂning of August. Last month the Alabama legÂisÂlaÂture voted to allow an occuÂpaÂtional tax to help fund the county. This tax will go into effect in JanÂuÂary and the bridge loan is intended to extend the counÂties funds until that time. This all sounds good except that by county comÂmisÂsion presÂiÂdent BetÂtye Fine Collins own admisÂsion the new tax will not cover all the costs for the workÂers. EssenÂtially the loan will bring a very short term relief then quickly disÂsiÂpatÂing leavÂing the county in even more debt. Where does it end? Why would Regions even conÂsider such a loan while lookÂing at the grim cirÂcumÂstances of the county?
How deep in debt must the county sink before we decide enough is enough and they declare bankÂruptcy? At this point I simÂply don’t think there will be any way to save the county withÂout doing so. I implore the comÂmisÂsion to stop the madness!
